UCED Launches the Largest Battery Energy Storage System in Slovakia

March 27, 2026

UCED, the energy division of the CREDITAS Group, has commissioned a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in the industrial park of Považská Bystrica. With an installed capacity of 10 MW and storage capacity of 16.7 MWh, the facility is currently the largest of its kind in Slovakia. The total investment in the project amounted to approximately CZK 125 million.

The new battery storage facility has been built within the premises of UCED Tepláreň Považská Bystrica, where the group also operates one of the largest combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants in Slovakia, with an electrical output of 58 MW. The plant supplies electricity and heat to local households and businesses while also contributing to the stability of the power grid.

The energy sector has been undergoing rapid change in recent years. The share of renewable energy sources—dependent on weather conditions—is increasing, which makes flexibility ever more important. Battery storage can respond within seconds: when there is excess electricity in the grid, it stores it; when there is a shortage, it feeds it back into the system,” says Pavel Bárdoš, Deputy Director of the Generation Division at UCED. The battery system will primarily provide ancillary services to support grid stability while also enabling trading on short-term electricity markets.

Battery storage will play an increasingly important role in the energy sector. Alongside the combined cycle power plant, Považská Bystrica is becoming a key energy hub where modern technologies supporting secure electricity supply are being gradually deployed,” adds Richard Holešinský, CFO of the UCED Group.

This investment follows UCED’s broader strategy focused on modern energy solutions and energy storage. In the Czech Republic, the group has already commissioned its first BESS at the UCED BIO biomass heating plant in Kutná Hora, with an output of 4 MW and a capacity exceeding 4.4 MWh. “UCED plans to continue expanding its battery storage portfolio and is preparing additional projects aimed at enhancing the flexibility of energy resources and contributing to the stability of power systems across Central Europe,” concludes Richard Holešinský.
